Are Orgasms Sexual?

by ProfKeith

It might sound like an odd question: of course orgasm is sexual, you say. But it may not be as clear cut as you think.

An interesting study I spotted in a special issue of the journal Sexual and Relationship Therapy showed that women could have orgasms, just from exercising. Not very sexy but sounds like good fun!

This type of orgasm I’m talking about is sometimes referred to as a “coregasm” because of its association with exercises that involve core abdominal muscles.

According to study author Debby Herbenick, co-director of the Center for Sexual Health Promotion at Indiana University’s School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, the most common activity associated with exercise-induced orgasm were abdominal exercises, climbing poles or ropes, biking/spinning and weight lifting.

The findings are based on the results of online surveys completed by 124 women between the ages of 18 and 63, who reported experiencing exercise-induced orgasms and 246 women who experienced exercise-induced sexual pleasure. Most of the women were married or in a relationship and about 69 percent were heterosexual.

The excitement was not just a one-off either; about 40 percent of the women who had experienced exercise-induced orgasms and exercise-induced sexual pleasure had done so on more than 10 occasions. Most of the women were not fantasizing.

So what works? I knew you’d be asking that!

Abdominal exercises accounted for 51 percent of exercise-induced orgasms, followed by weight lifting (27 percent), yoga (20 percent), bicycling (16 percent), running (13 percent) and walking/hiking (10 percent).

Around 20% of the women said they could not prevent the orgasm. Well, they might have said that just because they were embarrassed. In any case, why would you want to block it? Prudery?

Never mind masturbation: go to the gym and have fun, I say… You can get fit at the same time!

Yes- this is true. I experience this kind of instant O when using certain weight machines that involve lower extremities and core engagement or doing long sets of yoga. Kind of fun but hard to keep the OMG smile and blush from giving things away.

I was watching a vidio on water births. The young lady in the big round bath in warm water up to her chest . her husband was also in the bath to rub her back and for emotional support. The midwife /Doula was at the side talking them through the birth of their little baby boy. I was puzzled at the mothers face. one of complete euphoria. Just after the birth and the midwife had the baby . she said that she had a long continuous orgasm during the last stages of the birth. said it was the most wonderful experience ever.

I’ve never heard of that one Bobbie… Orgasms during birth?
Must make it wonderful.
Now, whenever I hear screaming at childbirth I might respond differently.
Orgasm looks quite like pain, have you noticed?
Maybe this is women’s’ bit secret (it doesn’t really hurt having a baby!!)
