Zombie is a popular buzzword these days. There is a TV show dedicated to Zombies: The Living Dead! But what is a zombie? A creature (usually human) that is more dead than alive. It walks, it talks, it howls… but it doesn’t think!

According to NBC television, Zombies are worth $5 billion a year to the economy!

Doctors and scientists have co-opted the term (jokingly) “zombie cells” to mean aged, senescent cells in our bodies that have outlived their usefulness: they are more or less dead. So, is that a problem?

Well, it turns out it’s a very big problem. Senescent cells are aged cells that stop functioning properly and can cause damage to surrounding tissues. They lose the ability to grow or divide, and yet they refuse to die off, so they are a bit like “zombie cells.”

It’s worse: these senescent cells spew out compounds that incite harmful systemic inflammation, inflicting even more damage. Senescent cells are a major driver of age-related disease and dysfunction. They even accelerate the aging process itself. [Dodig S, Cepelak I, Pavic I. Hallmarks of senescence and aging. Biochem Med (Zagreb). 2019 Oct 15;29(3):030501].

The Dracula Experiment

This is shown by the fact that if we take the blood of young animals and inject it into senile animals (you can’t do this with humans; shades of Dracula!) the older creatures are rejuvenated and act much younger.

That means either there is a “youthful” factor being transferred. Or there is a “senile” factor that is being diluted. It turns out to be the second of the two. As we get older, we accumulate “agedness” factor in the blood. It turns out this senility factor is old and dying cells. If we can remove them, we feel rejuvenated and healthy again.

It doesn’t need blood transfers. We get the same happy result when we do fasting and keto. Keto triggers the removal of aged “zombie” cells, eaten up by macrophages, a process called autophagy (literally: eating self in posh old Greek). This process is sometimes called “cellular housekeeping.”

As a result, we feel vibrant, energetic and healthier than before. We also, coincidentally, get a rush of stem cells too, ready to go to work restoring and repairing the body’s tissues.

That’s why I highly recommend intermittent fasting and keto. BUT IS THERE AN EASIER WAY? Oh, you bet!

There are nutrient compounds called senolytics (posh Greek for age dissolvers). A number of these have been studied and some are really good at “zombie detoxing”, shall we call it!

Check Wikipedia and it says this: A senolytic is among a class of small molecules under basic research to determine if they can selectively induce death of senescent cells and improve health in humans. A goal of this research is to discover or develop agents to delay, prevent, alleviate, or reverse age-related diseases.

The first senolytic substances studied were Dasatinib, Quercetin, Fisetin and Navitoclax. Here I’m going to focus in on Fisetin. Why? Because I’m selling it, silly! Just read on…

Fisetin

Fisetin really is the finest thoroughbred horse in the senolytics stable, destroying dysfunctional senescent cells and extending lifespan by approximately 10% in animal studies.

It is a plant flavonol from the flavonoid group of polyphenols. These are a hot anti-oxidant group of compounds! Fisetin can be found in many fruits and vegetables, where it serves as a yellow/ochre coloring agent, such as in strawberries*, apples, persimmons, onions and cucumbers.

According to a study published in eBioMedicine, an arm of The Lancet: “Of 10 flavonoids tested, fisetin was definitely the most potent senolytic.”

Acute or intermittent treatment of old mice with fisetin reduced senescence markers in multiple tissues. Administration of fisetin to wild-type mice late in life reduced age-related pathology, and extended median and maximum lifespan. [eBioMedicine. Volume 36, P18-28, October 01, 2018]

Here in one image is the result of taking good senolytic drugs (courtesy UK Daily Mail):

There is a lot more to fisetin than just life extension. The article went on to comment “Late life intervention [with fisetin] was sufficient to yield a potent health benefit” in both humans and mice.

Anti-Inflammatory and Other Beneficial Effects

In line with its role as a flavonol, fisetin has powerful anti-oxidant and therefore anti-inflammatory effects. According to the book Role of Flavonoids in Management of Inflammatory Disorders (Editors: Ronald Watson, Victor Preedy. 2019), fisetin “powerfully” reduced markers of inflammation, which benefitted joints and other tissues.

Another book, Regenerative Nephrology (2nd edition, 2021. Editor: Michael Goligorsky), showed that in aging mice (22–24 months), fisetin treatment decreased cellular aging in kidney, liver, fat, and spleen, and reduced levels of circulating senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) factors (don’t even ask!) The mice lived 10% longer. [Yousefzadeh MJ, Zhu Y, McGowan SJ, et al. Fisetin is a seno- therapeutic that extends health and lifespan. EBioMedicine. 2018 Oct;36:18-28].

Fisetin even has a role against cancer, according to a Science Direct review. It helped induce cellular apoptosis (programmed cell death), alone and in conjunction with a chemo-gent: cisplatin. This was against deadly lung cancer cells, so that could be important to many of us. [https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/medicine-and-dentistry/fisetin]

A 2014 study described various flavonoids, such as apigenin, baicalein, cyanidin, fisetin, galangin, hesperetin, luteolin, myricetin, naringenin, phloretin and quercetin, as quite potent inhibitors of DNA methyltransferase activity (that’s good—tumor cells typically exhibit aberrant DNA methylation patterns during malignant transformation)

[Zhang, W., Xu, J. DNA methyltransferases and their roles in tumorigenesis. Biomark Res 5, 1 (2017). https://doi.org/10.1186/s40364-017-0081-z]

Mimicking Caloric Restriction

Reducing food intake through a calorie-restricted diet has been shown to slow aging, extend lifespan, and improve resistance to disease.

Research has identified the cellular pathways that are affected by such a diet. Among other benefits, caloric restriction: And, of course, that helps with weight loss, glucose control and, ultimately, diabetes.

There are 3 main ways that fisetin can help with weight control…

Reduces the activity of mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin), a remarkable substance linked to aging, weight gain, and chronic disease.

Boosts the function of sirtuins (remember resveratrol and that story?)

It helps flip the “fat switch” to OFF, by increasing the activity of the enzyme AMPK.

Fisetin not only has the ability to extend lifespan in preclinical models, it may also reduce the risk for many of the most common chronic illnesses.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the U.S. Most common forms of heart disease are due to inadequate flow of blood, oxygen, and nutrients to the heart, which can lead to a heart attack.

Over the last two years, studies have demonstrated that fisetin can protect the heart from injury. Even after heart attack models, heart cells fare better when fisetin is present.

In one recent study published in the journal Nature, rat heart cells starved for nutrients and oxygen were protected by fisetin, preventing cell death.

And in animal models of heart attack, the extent of heart damage was reduced when treated with fisetin, preserving better heart function.

So We All NEED Fisetin. What Next?

It so happens I have picked up a line of fisetin supplements. I’m even being given the right to use the title “Zombie Cell Detox”!

If you’ve been following me for long, you know my aggressive (and justified) stance on the dangers of statin drugs. I’ll keep writing about it until someone stops this insanity! Now, there’s hard scientific evidence of a link between statins and memory loss!

Statin Drugs Defined

Any pharmaceutical drug that artificially lowers low-density lipoprotein (LDL) – or what is referred to as “bad” cholesterol – is classified as a statin. These drugs block the production of cholesterol in the liver and lower how much is pumping through your blood.

You probably see commercials on television about the importance of lowering your cholesterol with the use of statin drugs such as Lipitor and Crestor. The companies that make these drugs make tens of billions in sales annually because more than 32 million adults in the United States are currently taking a statin prescription.

The Complexity and Confusion about Cholesterol

Artificially inhibiting the production of cholesterol in your body affects every single cell because you need cholesterol to live. It is an essential building block that your body uses to produce the cell membranes, vitamin D, hormones, and the bile you need to digest fat.

Without it, your brain (which contains 25% of the cholesterol inside you) begins to starve.

The Dangers of Statins – Proven Side Effects

Pains and spasms in muscles, joints, and tendons

Digestive problems

Dysfunction with sleep patterns

Kidney distress

Liver distress

Type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance

Decrease in muscle mass

Sexual dysfunction

Changes in mood

Weakness and fatigue due to interference in CoQ10 production

Inability to concentrate or decreased cognition

All of these side effects have been proven by scientific research that spans more than 900 studies. How does the organization that is supposed to monitor drugs to assure their safety in the United States respond to these potentially deadly side effects?

In an unhelpful report from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the proven side effects that include damage to muscles, liver, kidneys, and more are considered “rare,” “mild,” and “small.” They aren’t even concerned about the increasing reports of statins on memory loss, cognitive impairment, and brain fog!

After all, they looked at all the data…

“[The] FDA has been investigating reports of cognitive impairment from statin use for several years. The reports about memory loss, forgetfulness, and confusion span all statin products and all age groups. In general, the symptoms were not serious and were reversible within a few weeks after the patient stopped using the statin. Some people affected in this way had been taking the medicine for a day; others had been taking it for years.”

The phrase “in general” makes me livid because that means there are people who have had serious cognitive side effects that were not reversible.

They then advise that if you fear statin use might be affecting your brain function, you should, “Talk to your health care professional. Don’t stop taking the medication; the consequences to your heart could be far greater.”

Statins are hailed as the savior from heart disease yet one of the most commonly reported side effects of their use is damage to muscles. Your heart is a muscle! Take a second to consider what that means. You’re being prescribed a drug to protect your heart that could end up damaging your heart.

The FDA changed the labeling instructions for statin drugs, which has done nothing to slow down how often they are prescribed.

Let’s pretend for a moment that the dangers of statins are worth it because they are helping your heart (they aren’t). What good is your heart without your brain functioning properly? What sort of quality of life does that leave you?

New Data about Statins and Memory Loss

In the United Kingdom, researchers with University of Bristol found that statins impaired laboratory rats’ ability to learn, recognize tasks and objects they previously encountered, and perform simple functions.

There have been several studies (one from the Mayo Clinic) that found elderly with highest levels of cholesterol have the lowest risk for dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases. They also advise that patients considering a statin drug “weigh the benefits and risks.”

The bottom line is that statins are prescribed for one reason – to lower your cholesterol. This is a compound you need to survive (especially your brain) so this causes a negative chain reaction inside your body. Worse, it isn’t going to help your heart anyway!

Raise HDL and Lower LDL Naturally

Cholesterol was touted as the “bad guy” in the pursuit of good health. The medical community laid all the blame for heart disease at its feet and told you to banish it from your diet.

Time has proven that their theories were wrong!

Stripping cholesterol from our diets did nothing to remove heart disease as the #1 killer in the world. Hand in hand, cancer, obesity, diabetes, and decline in brain function have also risen.

Stop starving your body and your brain! Eat the foods that feed every cell and deliver an abundance of nutrition.

Best Sources for “Good” Cholesterol

Fatty fish and fish oils

Nuts and seeds

Olive and coconut oil

Organic beef, poultry, and dairy products

Eggs (the whole thing!)

Avocados

Get off the “whole grain” merry-go-round because it’s a myth! Lose those ridiculous amounts of carbs and sugars from your diet and replace them with fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats.

It isn’t all about food and we both know that, don’t we? You have to exercise, quit smoking, get plenty of rest, and lower your stress. Cut the use of statins and memory loss risk is a bit lower.

The real key to a healthy heart and a strong brain is taking control (and being accountable) for your choices. Knowing that there are no “easy” fixes.

There is no miracle drug (including dangerous statins) that will keep you looking, feeling, and thinking younger for the rest of your life.

It takes work and commitment. Start today!

Dangerous advanced glycation end products (AGEs) can impact your entire body. They are the result of proteins (amino acids) and sugars (glucose) binding together. This is a process known as glycation.

These compounds are pro-inflammatory, toxic compounds that lead to damage in food as well as the human body on the cellular level. AGEs are basically by-products that accumulate in your tissues over your lifetime.

AGEs have been scientifically linked to…

Diabetes and insulin resistance

Loss of bone density and muscle mass

Heart disease (damage to interior blood vessel walls)

Rheumatoid arthritis

Metabolic disorders

Obesity

Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and dementia

Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress

A majority of these conditions are common to many people as they grow older so the acronym AGE is appropriate. To slow dangerous advanced glycation end products on your body and quality of life, you must limit what they use for fuel!

How Do AGEs Get In Your Body?

The Mount Sinai School of Medicine worked in collaboration with scientists around the world on the research of advanced glycation end products. They discovered several key factors about how AGEs accumulate and the overall effects on your body.

“Modern diets are largely heat-processed and as a result contain high levels of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). Dietary advanced glycation end products (dAGEs) are known to contribute to increased oxidant stress and inflammation, which are linked to the recent epidemics of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.”

They go on to suggest, “Cooking methods such as poaching, steaming, stewing, and boiling. The use of acidic marinades, such as lemon juice and vinegar, before cooking can also limit dAGE generation.”

Broiling, grilling, and frying your foods at high heats stimulates AGE production! The Mount Sinai team offered an example of beef that is broiled in comparison to being stewed or boiled. The AGE content drops by almost 65% just by changing the cooking method!

Then there is the actual food you’re eating…and most of it is deadly.

What I’m going to share goes against everything you’re being told by the media, the food industry, and the medical community.

How Can You Stop the AGE Invasion?

If you are diagnosed with diabetes or heart disease, one of the first things your doctor will likely suggest is that you eat everything “low fat” and to increase your intake of whole grains.

Nothing could be further from the truth!

First of all, the garbage they put in “low fat” foods to take out the fat is much worse than the fat itself. Second, whole grains do nothing but dump massive quantities of carbohydrates into your body – which converts to sugar – which causes more dangerous advanced glycation end products!

The average American consumes more than two pounds of sugar every week. A vast amount of that sugar is in the form of high-fructose corn syrup that is added to everything from “healthy” cereals and breads to sodas and processed foods.

Even foods you wouldn’t consider “sweet” likely contain it because it is cheap and plentiful. It is also one of the primary factors in inflammation, obesity, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease epidemics! Fructose is difficult for your body to process and stresses out your liver.

120 calories of glucose is not the same as 120 calories of fructose. 120 fructose calories translates to 40 calories being stored as fat! Modern society consumes all this refined and processed sugar…and then you’re told to boost your intake of whole grains, which equals more sugar.

Worse, it’s contributing to the breakdown of your brain! Even people without diabetes are in danger of sugar overload that leads to dementia!

The Mayo Clinic found that those who follow a high-carb diet have an 89% greater risk of cognitive impairment. Meanwhile, they discovered that those who followed a high-fat diet have a 44% lower risk of cognitive impairment.

Why is this information not being blasted around the world?

That’s an excellent question and the answer will disturb you. If the medical community admitted that forty years of “low-fat” and “high carb” advice was wrong, it would place the responsibility for obesity and disease at their door.

Instead, they crush the research, raise the noise level, and distract the average consumer with “this tastes good,” “this is cheap,” and “this is convenient.”

Therefore, the problems continue, the health of the population continues to degrade, and it doesn’t look as though they plan to change that anytime soon.

Your diet is the key to a long and healthy life or the path to a life riddled with disease! You are receiving the wrong information.

Quick Takeaways

Limit grains (whole grains or otherwise)

Limit carbohydrates in all forms

Make sure you get plenty of vitamin D

Add some saturated fats such as grass-fed beef and eggs (the entire egg!)

The brain is 70% saturated fats and you’re going to have a healthier brain if you feed it! Get rid of the sugars and supposed “healthy” grains that are starving your brain and leaving it filled with sticky plaque!

The diet you’re choosing based on bad information is causing the production of dangerous advanced glycation end products in your body. Those AGEs are aging you too fast, attacking your vital organs, and leaving your brain vulnerable!
