If there was a substance that had powerful properties which caused cancer cells to undergo apoptosis (programmed suicide), you would think it pretty remarkable.

You would also expect the medical profession to jump on this “miracle cure” and start promoting it.

Unfortunately, most of the medical profession isn’t interested in cures; it’s only interested in money. A cured patient is a disaster—the poor doctor loses his income stream. In fact the profession thinks that a patient who dies slowly and with expensive treatment is the ideal situation, but a cure is a problem.

So, we are on our own here.

So what is this wonder treatment I’m referring to?

What Is Apoptosis and How Does It Work?

It’s lemon grass; or more exactly, citral extract, which comes from lemon grass. And to be precise about this discovery, what I am saying is that Israeli researchers at Ben Gurion University (BGU) have found that one gram of lemon grass contains enough citral to prompt cancer cells to commit suicide in the test tube. It does this without harming normal cells.

The findings were published in the scientific journal Planta Medica, which highlights research on alternative and herbal remedies. Shortly afterwards, the discovery was featured in the popular Israeli press.

Citral is the key component that gives the lemony aroma and taste in several herbal plants such as lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus), melissa (Melissa officinalis) and verbena (Verbena officinalis.)

The BGU investigators checked the influence of the citral on cancerous cells by adding them to both cancerous cells and normal cells that were grown in a petri dish. The quantity added in the concentrate was equivalent to the amount contained in a cup of regular tea using one gram of lemon herbs in hot water. While the citral killed the cancerous cells, the normal cells remained unharmed.

As they learned of the BGU findings in the press, many physicians in Israel began to believe that while the research certainly needed to be explored further, in the meantime it would be advisable for their patients, who were looking for any possible tool to fight their condition, to try to harness the cancer-destroying properties of citral.

The best way to consume the citral and create apopis to put the loose lemon grass in hot water, and drink about eight glasses each day.

However don’t go crazy and assume it’s a done deal. Science is rarely that easy!

One study I found suggested citral might cause cancer, lymphoma, in female mice fed citral in their food.

Citral was nominated by the National Cancer Institute for study because of its widespread use in foods, beverages, cosmetics, and other consumer products and its structure as a representative beta-substituted vinyl aldehyde.

Citral is used primarily as lemon flavoring in foods, beverages, and candies. It is also used as a lemon fragrance in detergents, perfumes, and other toiletries.

Male and female rats exposed to significant doses of citral exhibited listlessness, hunched posture, absent or slow paw reflex, and dull eyes. But there was no increased incidence of any cancers.

However, the incidences of malignant lymphoma in female mice exposed to citral at 2,000 ppm was significantly greater than that in the vehicle control group. Tissues most commonly affected by malignant lymphoma were the spleen, mesenteric lymph node, thymus, and, to a lesser extent, the ovary.

The researchers described this incidence of lymphoma in mice as “equivocal” evidence of cancer-causing properties. If the testing was done properly, it should not, in my view, be dismissed as equivocal. It would be grounds for further research.

For you (reader), it depends if you want to go with the rats or the mice!

A little potpourri* this week! First, a sensational, rather amusing suggestion for anti-aging; you’ll never hear this one from a regular doctor!

It’s bleach! Well, diluted bleach.

I’m serious. I came across a reference in my New Scientist, to a study published in the Journal Of Clinical Investigation, which showed that mice wading in bleach for 30 minutes a day aged dramatically less.

The researchers were looking at inflammation which, as you know, is the number one aging process in our bodies.

Doctors have known for years that diluted bleach alleviates inflammatory eczema, though nobody knows why. It’s not sterilizing the skin: the concentrations they use are less than that of swimming bath water.

Maybe it stems inflammation? The authors of the study speculate it may block a chemical NF-kB, which recruits inflammatory cells. Apparently bleach rips electrons off and that’s a way to denature anything. Heck, that’s how chlorine dioxide solution (Jim Humble’s MMS) works: it looks for positively charged substances (pathogens), rips the electrons off and so neutralizes them.

The team, at Stanford University in California, had irradiated mice wading in dilute bleach water for 30 minutes a day for 10 days and then assessed the result. They called it the mouse “spa treatment”! It was very effective at lowering the inflammatory response.

What’s more, the older mice had increased skin cell production, resulting in thicker, younger-looking skin.

Pass the Clorox!

Amazing Fungus Furniture

While mentioning the New Scientist, let me share something else I learned from that journal: fungus furniture! Again, I’m serious. New Scientist is holding a Christmas competition and the prize is a fungus chair.

It’s made from the Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum). The massive block you see is the part that grows underground (the mycelium). These can be very massive indeed; the largest living organism on Earth is a fungus mycelium, growing in Oregon. It now covers 2,200 acres and is 3.5 miles across!

The creator of this fungus furniture is Phillip Ross from San Francisco. He uses a black plastic bag pressed tight against the soma which cuts off gas exchange, prompting the fungus to form a leather-like layer to encase itself.

The furniture fungus is then killed, so it won’t invade the home. It’s treated at 670 and coated in lacquer, so spores can no longer form.

No worries about durability; these will outlast normal wares, says Ross.

Ganoderma (Reishi or Lingzi mushroom) is a formidable health ally. It’s an anti-aging, attacks cancer, modulates the immune system, wards off heart disease, calms the nerves and relieve both allergies and inflammation.

It seems that mushroom therapy can help against cancer in 4 specific ways:

1. Immune stimulant
2. Helps immune cells bind to tumor cells
3. Actually reduces the number of cancer cells (cytotoxic effect)
4. Slows down growth

Different compounds found in Reishi are responsible for each of these effects.

The Japanese government officially recognizes mushroom cancer therapy as a treatment, whereas in the USA, it’s just a folk cure hoax! Go figure.

Cancer Meets Its Nemesis With Mushrooms

OK, enough of the frivolity (well, it is the holiday season). Let’s do cutting edge medicine.

Reprogramming human blood cells has put an end to cancers we thought were incurable.

In March 2013 Michael Sadelain at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York announced successfully treating 5 cases of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with genetically-engineered immune cells from the patients own blood [see, genetic engineering has many uses other than growing dodgy food crops!]

One of the patients recovered in just 8 days. Sadelain would probably argue that’s the power of the treatment, though I would want to argue that it’s due to the magic of Nature.

You know I have always said that, ultimately, all successful treatments are going to have to follow Nature.

Since then a further 11 people have been put into remission. Several other cancers are being looked at.

What is new is the idea of training the body’s own immune cells to fight cancer. We all know that cancer is basically a disease of the immune system; it stops protecting the individual and cancer gains a foothold. Cancer is a sign your immune system is dangerously low, most often due to nutritional starvation.

The latest techniques teach T-cells to target cancer cells, while leaving healthy cells untouched. The trouble is that ALL affects B-lymphocytes, also part of the immune system.

That’s why it’s so deadly. So Sadelain programs the T-cells to wipe out all the B-lymphocytes, whether healthy or not. Then a marrow transplants restores the healthy cells.

The T-cells are already there, armed and waiting, to wipe out any rogue B-cells which appear.

Voila!

This Is Essentially A “Living Drug”

Well, they would use terms like that, wouldn’t they? But I’m OK with this term; it’s true!

Several drug and biotech companies are developing these therapies. Penn has patented its method and licensed it to Switzerland-based Novartis AG. The company is building a research center on the Penn campus in Philadelphia and plans a clinical trial next year that could lead to federal approval of the treatment as soon as 2016.

Talking with the researchers, “there is a sense of making history…a sense of doing something very unique,” said Hervé Hoppenot, president of Novartis Oncology, the division leading the work.

Lee Greenberger, chief scientific officer of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, says, “From our vantage point, this looks like a major advance,” he said. “We are seeing powerful responses…and time will tell how enduring these remissions turn out to be.”

It’s a bit high tech, admittedly. But this is better than the ghastly chemical approach.

But you know…and here’s the kicker: fever cures ALL quite often.

We see increased survival time in children with ALL after a high fever. Unfortunately, most ignorant doctors panic when the fever comes on. They immediately book more chemo, because the immune system “isn’t working”. That effectively blocks Nature’s wisdom.

Fever Can Cure ALL

My idea would be to create a fever if possible; and sweat it out (not meant to be a pun), watching the child’s temperature soar and yet do nothing. It’s a hard discipline!

But doctors are missing the powerful insight this effect brings. They go on using the “it’s busted” model, instead of shouting “Hooray!” when the fever comes on.

So What’s This New Story?

Tumors in several people with an advanced form of skin cancer have completely disappeared after treatment with new drugs that force tumor cells out of hiding. The patient’s own immune system can then recognize the cancer and destroy it.

It’s been likened to re-booting the immune system. Involving the immune system is smart because it can keep cancers in check whatever tricks they spring on us.

Indeed, that’s why therapies designed to unburden your immune system (like my “Diet Wise” approach) are so powerful and effective against cancer. If you can truly re-boot your immune system, minus glitches, it’s killer when it comes to mopping up cancer and can eradicate it in as little as a few days, fully and permanently.

Results presented at the 2013 annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago show how three antibodies can blow cancer’s cover.

How It Works

Even the very slickest, fully-functioning, immune system can be outfoxed by cancer. That’s because tumor cells find ways to camouflage themselves from the immune system.

Cancer cells should normally be spotted by T-cells—immune cells that recognize and destroy foreign material in the body—but they may escape detection. Tumor cells have evolved a way of hiding themselves from T-cells by sprouting a surface molecule called a ligand.

The ligand binds to and activates a receptor on the T-cells called PD-1, which screws things up for the immune system: the T-cells fail to recognize the cancer cell as foreign and are fooled into mistaking tumors for normal tissue.

But what if we could block the ligand from latching onto the PD-1 receptor? Ah, that would drag cancers out into the open where they can be gunned down by even a scrappy T-cell army, never mind the anti-cancer SWAT teams we have in our blood!

That’s the essence of the new breakthrough treatment and suddenly we have, not one, but three effective antibodies, which can block the ligand camouflage—and the promise of hundreds more to come, once the technique has been mastered.

The Three Musketeers!

The first one is called Lambrolizumab (same old computer-generated clunky names, unfortunately).

In a study featuring 135 people with advanced melanoma – the most deadly form of skin cancer – 54 of the tumors more than halved in volume after treatment with Lambrolizumab. Even more excitingly, 6 tumors disappeared altogether in six of the 57 people who were given the highest dose of this drug.

Results were equally impressive with Nivolumab, a second antibody drug. Tumors more than halved in size and significantly decreased in number in 21 of 53 people with advanced melanoma who took the drug alongside another drug.

Cancer vanished completely within 12 weeks in three of the 17 people who received the highest dose.

This was very quick; sometimes within three weeks, according to Jedd Wolchok of the Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, who led the trial.

A third antibody drug worked a little differently, blocking the cancer cell ligand rather than the PD-1 receptor. It too produced impressive results in a small number of people who had other types of cancer, including lung and kidney.

All three drugs are now entering larger trials involving people with skin, kidney, lung and brain cancers. Unfortunately, it will take years for these treatments to come to the market.

Dr. Wolchok waxed lyrical and stated that what makes these antibody therapies so exciting is that unlike conventional cancer treatments, such as radio and chemotherapy, is that they work by reviving the power of the patient’s own immune system. “They treat the patient, not the tumor,” Wolchok says.

Immune System Is Key

Some of us, aware of what is really going on, have described cancer as basically a disease of the immune system. The most successful treatments are those which revive the immune system and boost its function, NOT those therapies which are described as “holistic” but are essentially poisons, deigned to knock out cancer cells.

The trouble has always been that if you try to poison cancer cells, you are going to poison healthy cells, ESPECIALLY immune system cells. Taking junk like DCA (dichloracetic acid) or Protocel (Cancel, Jim’s Juice, etc.), which is a mixture of sulphuric acid and other very nasty compounds, has never made sense to me. There’s no difference between that approach and chemo: poison one and try not to poison the other.

Unfortunately, if it’s done wrong—and everybody is different—then the patient goes under.

But what this kind of approach to cancer healing shows us, very clearly, is that if you bolster your immune system, you are going to have the best possible chance of knocking out cancer—permanently.

The most powerful tools—diet and nutrition, oxygen boosters, emotional releasing and chemical clean up—are all about that one thing: reviving a flagging immune system.

A Whole New Attitude

In an article for the British Science Journal New Scientist, Wolchok says that antibody therapies, alongside other emerging strategies for reviving the immune system, are opening up a fresh chapter in cancer treatment, one that could rapidly expand the number of people being cured of the disease.

“The immune system can sculpt itself around the spectrum of changes that is part of the genetic instability of cancers,” he says.

Other promising immune therapies include genetically engineering a patient’s own T-cells to recognize and destroy cancer cells.

Earlier this year, one person with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia was cured in just eight days after their T-cells were engineered to attack any cell with a surface molecule called CD19, which is unique to the cancerous cells.

A company called Kite Pharma in Los Angeles was recently formed to develop this technique for many other cancers.

“All you need is an identifier for tumor cells and it doesn’t make any difference how the tumor evolves after that,” says Aya Jakobovits, co-founder of Kite Pharma. “With our approach, you overcome all challenges of tumor biology because you go back to a fully functioning immune system.”

Big Pharma Problem

Well, it’s good news today and truly the end of toxic cancer therapies is in sight.

But the Big Pharma problem won’t go away for a long time. I make the following predictions:

• Within 10 years this will be the number one orthodox anti-cancer therapy.
• The cost will be about $50,000 per shot (otherwise how is poor old starving Big Pharma going to get its money, from such a successful treatment?)
• Most people won’t be offered it, because the current medical model is not curing people, but “treating” people.
• Countries down the pecking order, like Russia, China, India and Malaysia break out of the patent trap will get this widely used.
• In 20 years, barbaric old school oncologists will still be killing people and insisting their way is best and has been “tried and proven for decades”.
• Some clever holistic physicians and marketers will get access to the test track and start tuning the large number of sometimes-effective natural remedies, to find out which ones effectively block the ligand-PD1 linkage!
• Orthodox doctors still won’t grasp that they should be teaching patients to bolster their immune system, with good diet, nutrition and lifestyle.

Meantime, What Can You Do?

Stay alive! Revolutions in medicine are just around the corner.

Just writing about Sir Robert McCarrison and The Hunzas he so famously studied has prompted me to enter a word about the apricot kernels and amygdalin/laetrile scam (read that piece here)

Several promoters are making fortunes by promoting amygdalin, laetrile and so-called “B17” as a cancer treatment. It’s fake; don’t fall for it.

To begin with, there is no B17, it’s not a vitamin (a vitamin, by definition, means something you will quickly die without). Secondly, Amygdalin is NOT laetrile and vice versa. Laetrile is a patented scam by altering the natural molecule. So forget the propaganda it’s somehow natural or “holistic”. It’s so toxic that I can’t see ANY DIFFERENCE between this therapy and chemotherapy: the whole rationale of chemotherapy is to kill the cancer before you kill the patient. It’s a great idea, in principle, but it’s dangerous in practice, because the gap between killing the cancer and killing the patient is very narrow. Too much chemo: patient dies.

It’s exactly the same with Laetrile. It’s extremely toxic and regularly kills patients (I mean, how “holistic” is that?)¹

The metabolism of amygdalin produces hydrogen cyanide, a potent toxin. Beta-glucosidase, one of the enzymes that catalyzes the release of cyanide from amygdalin, is present in the human small intestine and in a variety of common foods. This leads to an unpredictable and potentially lethal toxicity when amygdalin or laetrile is taken orally.

Ingestion of purified amygdalin or apricot kernels can cause severe toxicity and death due to cyanide poisoning. Amygdalin was first isolated in 1830. In 1845 it was used as a cancer treatment in Russia and it was tried as an anticancer agent in Germany in 1892, but was discarded as ineffective and too toxic for that purpose. It re-appeared in the 1920s in the United States, but it was considered too poisonous.

That didn’t stop Ernst T. Krebs, Sr., MD, and his seriously underperforming son with a fake “MD”—from promoting it and making money. The deaths started with these two supposed pioneers and they continue to this day, no matter what you may hear from the sleaze peddlers.²

Don’t believe me? Numerous case reports in medical literature describe serious cyanide poisoning in patients who ingested laetrile as a cancer treatment. Of course the scammers say that’s all part of an official conspiracy to discredit their sleazy merchandise. Well, I am not part of a government cover-up and I’m telling you, it’s a very bad idea. And doctors in ER dealing with stiffs who have been killed by Laetrile are not conspirators either.

No recorded studies or survival rates from Laetrile or Amygdalin have ever gone beyond the extremely good placebo recovery rate. Read my book “Cancer Research Secrets” (or if you have got it already, look again on page 8-9) for the true facts on what significant numbers of cancers will simply go away, if left alone.

Some laetrile promoters have claimed that the cyanide generated by laetrile is immediately harmlessly detoxified by the mitochondrial enzyme rhodanese into thiocyanate. However, these claims are false. First, because thiocyanate is also toxic, although to a lesser degree. Second, the body only can use the small amount of rhodanese that is present in the blood, regardless of the stores present in kidneys and liver. Third, the limited factor in this conversion are the stores of cystine, cysteine, and other sulfur compounds, which are rapidly depleted in laetrile poisoning. Fourth, blood analysis show undetoxified cyanide in persons poisoned with laetrile or with apricot kernels.²

Translation: they died of the treatment, just like chemotherapy.

Yes, I’m angry at nonsense which masquerades as “holistic”, though I am not suggesting the therapists out there are all cheats and deliberately misleading the public. Many, I am sure, are very sincere. But the cures they get are due to natural recovery or the other therapeutic interventions (diet, for example). Thing is, I don’t know anybody who is using ONLY Laetrile. So stories about recoveries are not really Laetrile recoveries anyway.

For your own good, just remember testimonials are not science. Whatever the therapy, good or bad, some people will recover and want to hoot about it!

Final Comment: I wouldn’t take it for any reason or allow a member of my family to do so. There are so many totally safe and truly effective alternative approaches to cancer; why risk death for a myth?

Medical science has moved forward to Mengele-style* Nazi mutilations, in the name of “medicine”. I am ashamed of my profession in this.To mutilate a woman’s body in the crazed belief that this is somehow helping her is beyond obscene or laughable; for once I can’t think of any words to fit.

Incompetence is one thing; ignorance is another; there is folly and delusion; but this? It beggars description.

Why am I so incensed?

Because it is unnecessary. It comes from fear and ignorance and the silly notion that genes are the ruling condition of health and that, once you have the gene, you are screwed, effectively.

I know different: I know that genes can be turned on and off easily, like a light switch. I have done it thousands of times. Genes mean almost nothing. In this case having the gene does not mean you will get breast cancer and moreover not having the gene still means that you could get the cancer.

YOU control your genes; or in this case, she does. So why pay attention to genes?

It appears the doctors have scared Angelina by claiming she has an 87% chance of developing breast cancer because it’s “in her genes” (her mother had the disease and died miserably). This is simply NOT true. The best that could be said of the stats is that, if you are foolish, don’t take care of your diet and lifestyle, like all the other idiots, your chances of getting cancer is as bad as theirs.

This scaremongering and abuse of statistics is part of the medical profession’s attempts to manipulate people and profits by creating fear. It’s criminal. They are, it is true, incompetent when it comes to cancer. But they won’t allow any natural healthy alternatives and so they are stuck with the idea that cancer is dreadful and very dangerous.

To protect their anti-Nature position, they pretend a science that does not exist. They ruthlessly steer the truth away from anything which they find inconvenient in their greedy world-view and no-one, not even a super star, is safe from their predations.

They call this “taking control” of the cancer. As if! As one cancer survivor angrily wrote about Jolie’s decision: Alas, my experience of cancer, and that of most patients and survivors that I know, is that having your cells and genes go haywire is an object lesson in lack of control. Our understanding of cancer is still tragically incomplete. Our treatments are still, frankly, rather barbaric. And the outcomes of treatment are still rather random.

But it’s worse. Let me tell you something that sickens me in this mutilation scenario. If a person has a disease miasm or other energetic program or field that predisposes sickness, IT WON’T GO AWAY! Instead, it will just find another expression. The disease you now “cannot get” just turns into a different disease.

They don’t measure this at all. They will smugly tell her: now you cannot possibly get breast cancer; you have no breasts. But they will not tell her whether they have ever measured to see if this brutal and expensive torture operation actually helps her lead a healthier and longer life. They don’t even know the answer!

I can answer that question from healing first principles: if in the future she is ill or sick to die, she will get something else. I just don’t know what.

Western medicine sails along oblivious to the real causes and mechanisms of disease. To them, everything is physical. A tumor is a tumor and the entire “problem”; they blindly cannot see that the lump is the RESULT of the problem!

As for the stupid women commentators who “praise” her brave and forward-thinking attitude; they are condemning fellow women to folly and mutilation, for no proper scientific result.

Make no mistake: the approach that “this might be a good idea” is NOT science. Science is when you show it does some good overall, when reviewed honestly and thoroughly. In the case of something this drastic, it is also incumbent on the advocates of the procedure to prove that no other option is available. They can never prove THAT, because it isn’t true!

PS. Reconstructive surgery is very good these days and I don’t doubt her plumptious breasts, even her nipples, are still up for fans to drool over. But that’s not really the point, is it?

You may even be at risk of the disease if you have never smoked. The point is that nicotine accumulates in certain tissues, including hair and nails, and can be measured accurately.

Comparing the toenails of 210 men with lung cancer and a comparison group of 630 men without lung cancer, researchers found that the men with the highest levels of nicotine were 10.5 times more likely to develop lung cancer.

Even when taking into account reported smoking — that is, when comparing men at similar levels of cigarette use — men with the most nicotine in their toenails were over 3.5 times more likely to get lung cancer than those with the least toenail nicotine.

Why toenails? Researchers were looking for a way to evaluate secondhand smoke exposure. Deposits in hair are well recognized. But hair and toenails are formed of the same kind of tissue, so logically they would show similar levels. And toenails record deposits of nicotine over a whole year.

More than that, in fact; the study showed that toenail nicotine levels are closely linked to smoking status six years prior to collection of clipping samples. Moreover, toenail nicotine levels predict the risk of heart disease in women. Women with the highest toenail nicotine levels have a 42% higher risk of heart disease than do those with the lowest levels.

One thing didn’t need proving is that smoking is harmful and the damage can be measured throughout the body, not just lungs.

We all know that orthodox medicine is NOT winning the war. But they claim that death rates are going down (true for many common cancers) and, of course, they take the credit. Overall, cancer death rates decreased by 1.8% per year among men and by 1.4% per year among women from 2000 to 2009. Death rates among children up to 14 years of age decreased by 1.8% per year.

Let me suggest a likely reason. For that, I need to bring in a second headline, published the same day: because of the recession, fewer people are visiting the doctor; it’s too costly.

Well, I have always said, if you want to stay healthy, stay away from doctors!

So here’s my suggestion: more patients are avoiding orthodox medicine, so cancer survival rates are improving!

I already revealed in my book Cancer Research Secrets, that—left alone—many cancers will recover spontaneously. It’s more than a suspicion that doctors create the real cancer problem and that the treatment is worse than the disease!

But a landmark study from Scandinavia showed that, if doctors did nothing, a significant number of cases underwent total remission: enough at least to say the first approach should be to wait and see; NOT rush the patients into same-day chemo.

This conservative approach would release the patients from much fear and pressure to act, when their head is so full of the dreaded C-word, he or she can’t think straight.

Mind you, it’s not all rosy, even in the propaganda.

Rates of death are on the rise from the potentially fatal form of skin cancer, melanoma, in men; uterine cancer in women; and liver and pancreatic cancer in both sexes. What’s more, the data show a rise in cancers related to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection (and they slip in that too few at-risk people are getting the vaccine that can help prevent these cancers).

It’s those words “can help prevent” that bothers me: this junk is totally unproven and Gardasil is one of the worst vaccines ever put on the market by a crooked and incompetent industry.

They INSIST you give it to your children at the age of around 12 years (boys and girls), with the sneering insinuation they are bound to be into buggery and promiscuity anyway, so better act now.

It gives me the shudders.

The real truth about cancer is that it is NOT a tumor; cancer is a systemic disease (meaning whole-body). The farcical interpretation of doctors is that only a little piece of the body has gone wrong. It’s like saying the floor is wet, with no search for the leaking pipe or faucet.

The problem is not a wet floor; the problem is a leak (or bad plumbing, to push the cause even further back)!

I keep saying “We are all battling cancer”. Statistically, it’s true, that you or a loved one is likely to get it.

But not if you read my Cancer Research Secrets and apply my “3 Pillars of Cancer Healing”. These are good general health measures anyway. I have a saying: any good health measure is an anti-cancer measure.

To summarily reject scientific and technical method and substitute prejudice and unfounded belief in folklore is just plain silly. We can all agree that the excesses of medical science are deplorable and dehumanizing. But newer and cleverer ways to beat cancer are what we need and many scientific breakthroughs are just around the proverbial corner.

The point is that, what really works is letting Nature lend a helping hand. That does NOT mean to eschew anything technical or from a lab and white-coated scientists. It means figuring out what Nature does best and copying that.

I have written many times that cancer is a natural process which has run amok. Tumors are not some alien growth that landed from outer space. A cancer is part of the patient’s own body. It only needs a clearer understanding of how it got that way and we can take sensible corrective measures.

Now here is a startling new breakthrough with enormous promise but from the very heart of advanced techno-medicine.

It centers around our understanding that cancer cells do not behave like normal cells. They don’t metabolize in the same way. Moreover, cancer cells lie outside the immune system borders. Cancer cells can’t actually defend themselves very well.

They are… well, vulnerable!

Now scientists have cottoned on to the idea of small cunning organisms which can attack cancer cells without attacking healthy tissue.

It exploits this loophole in cancer metabolism.

We now have what are called “oncolytic viruses”. You know what a virus is (a little piece of bad news, wrapped up in protein, as one wit put it!). Oncolytic means cancer-dissolving.

And that’s what happens. The viruses are allowed to invade the body; they attack and kill cancer cells but leave normal healthy cells unharmed.

The secret to this is that these strains of viruses do not replicate by getting into the DNA, as most viruses do, and where they can’t be dislodged. Instead they replicate in the cytoplasm of the cell and can be picked off by any competent immune function, such as is possessed by every healthy, normal cell.

Several types of oncolytic viruses have been developed to date. The most clinically advanced poxvirus is probably JX-594 — during a Phase II trial, 5 of 7 evaluable patients exhibited stable disease after taking JX-594 combined with the multikinase inhibitor Nexavar. A separate Phase III trial of the herpes virus OncoVEX GM-CSF found that 14 of 17 patients with head & neck cancer developed stable disease, and the same proportion of patients were alive and disease-free after more than two years of follow-up.

It’s true these are very small numbers. But what is exciting is that this process can take place at all, even in just one individual, never mind a few!

The most promising form of oncolytic virus is called reovirus. Reovirus is a virus with no known associated disease. Reovirus is found everywhere in nature and has been isolated from untreated sewage, river, and stagnant waters. Exposure to reovirus is common in humans, with half of all children by the age of twelve having been exposed and nearly 100 percent testing positive by adulthood.

As I said, reovirus replicates in the cytoplasm and therefore does not integrate into the cell’s DNA. The reovirus kills the host cell, thus releasing more new viruses to infect new cancer cells and the process can replicate over and over. But when normal cells are infected with reovirus, the immune system can neutralize the virus.

Not all human cancer cells are susceptible to the pathway used by the reovirus; but the majority are.

It has even been demonstrated in animal studies that reovirus is capable of treating metastatic cancer, providing the mouse immune system is functioning.

Now the view is to combine reovirus with chemotherapy (yes, I know: when will they dump the chemo part? No time soon, I fear) But it may be that the chemo does truly help, in that it prevents the cancer cells fighting back against the reovirus.

Calgary-based Oncolytics Biotech has developed this biologic agent, Reolysin, from naturally occurring reovirus, and it is showing extremely good results in human trials. Many head & neck cancer patients treated with a combination of Reolysin and chemotherapy to date have experienced dramatic and prolonged tumor shrinkage, without increasing adverse side effects.
