Every person experiences inflammation as part of a normal immune system response to infection, sickness, or stress. This is a system function called acute inflammation and your body needs it. However, chronic inflammation is a different animal altogether – and one of the leading causes of major disease.

It has been proven to both cause disease and worsen disease. Cancer, diabetes, heart disease, dementia, and autoimmune diseases are just some of the horrific consequences of chronic inflammation that rages out of control and is never resolved.

The Link Between Obesity and Inflammation

In a society where we are literally overloading our bodies with more food than we need, more than is even remotely healthy, it should come as no surprise that obesity and inflammation go hand in hand.

Sickness, disease, and just not “feeling right” are less often the result of nutrient deficiency and more often the cause of toxic overload. Getting far too much of what your body either doesn’t want or cannot process.

You can imagine how much of that you’re exposed to with the explosion of fake food, fast food, and highly processed foods that have inundated our food supply in the last few decades.

Add to that the portions that are out of control and you’re literally overdosing your body. The type of food and quantity of it that much of the population is consuming is making us sick.

It is creating an unnatural environment that acts aggressively toward your own tissues. Once it gets to a certain point of toxic body burden, your normal system functions are unable to reverse or repair the damage on its’ own.

While not every American consumes ridiculous amounts of toxic foods, enough are that the statistics for obesity are horrific. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 70.7% of American adults are considered overweight or obese.

What’s shocking is that as bad as that statistic is, the United States isn’t even the most obese country in the world! The Washington Post reported that there are at least 20 countries ahead of us on the list! I say at least because this data was gathered in 2015 and the U.S. obesity rate has continued to climb several points.

Since 1975, the rate of obesity has tripled. Barely four decades! The World Health Organization (WHO) puts the number at around 1.9 billion in 2016. To make matters worse, 41 million children (under age 5) and 340 million children (age 5-19) are overweight or obese.

Obesity is a worldwide epidemic. One that is well-known, well-researched, but little is being done to combat it. Despite all the workout programs available, the fad diets, and telling kids to exercise, the needle is not moving in the right direction. Why?

Because our food supply is garbage.

The food manufacturers know their food is garbage, the government knows their food is garbage, and yet, it is produced, sold, and consumed at absolutely gluttonous levels. Just so you’re aware, that last part is by design. Food manufacturers discovered that adding certain things to foods – like sugar, salt, and unhealthy fat – eventually gets the human body addicted.

Here’s an excerpt from an article in The New York Times called “The Extraordinary Science of Addictive Junk Food” from 2013:

A chemist by training with a doctoral degree in food science, [James] Behnke became Pillsbury’s chief technical officer in 1979. He was engaged in conversation with a group of food-science experts who were painting an increasingly grim picture of the public’s ability to cope with the industry’s formulations – from the body’s fragile controls on overeating to the hidden power of some processed foods to make people feel hungrier still.

The first speaker was a vice president of Kraft named Michael Mudd. “There are no easy answers – for what the public health community must do to bring this problem under control or for what the industry should do as others seek to hold it accountable for what has happened. For those of us who’ve looked hard at this issue, whether they’re public health professionals or staff specialists in your own companies, we feel sure that the one thing we shouldn’t do is nothing.”

Food manufacturers were now being blamed for the problem from all sides — academia, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society. The secretary of agriculture, over whom the industry had long held sway, had recently called obesity a “national epidemic.”

“We are saying that the industry should make a sincere effort to be part of the solution,” Mudd concluded. “And that by doing so, we can help to defuse the criticism that’s building against us.”

Naturally, the CEOs of the food industry giants (General Mills, Nestle, and more) shot down all the efforts to dial back the addictive and unhealthy formulations that made them so much money!

The entire article is eye-opening as investigative reporting should be. I urge you to look up the name and read it for yourself. It definitely gives weight to the (known and ignored) link between obesity and chronic inflammation.

They are each causes of the other. If you are obese, you likely have a higher rate of inflammation. If you have high rates of inflammation, your risk of obesity (and everything else) is also much higher.

Either of these two conditions – if left untreated – will lead to illness and rapid aging.

The Signs Can No Longer Be Ignored – By Anyone!

Researchers with the University of Oslo (Norway) found that obesity is just as dangerous as malnutrition on a molecular level. It has been known for decades that malnutrition damages the immune system and leaves your body vulnerable to infections and disease. The immune system uses temporary inflammation to fight bacteria, viruses, and parasites in your body. When the risk is resolved, the inflammation lowers.

It turns out that eating too much boosts the immune response without a threat, causing chronic inflammation, the verified source of some of the biggest killers on the planet.

Professor Bente Halvorsen explained, “With this new knowledge, we can better understand why too much food can cause such serious diseases as heart attack, stroke, cancer and chronic intestinal inflammation. We can reduce the inflammatory reaction by losing weight.”

There is much more research to be done but initial results point to the mitochondria – our cells’ power sources – and how they convert fat to energy. Too much food stresses these tiny power plants and causes damage that leads to chronic inflammation.

To break it down…

We eat too much

Fat accumulates in the cells

Our mitochondria become overworked and damaged

This triggers an immune response

Which results in systemic (body-wide) inflammation

The cycle repeats over and over

Another study from the Institute for Molecular Bioscience at the University of Queensland in Australia found that PAR2 – a protein found in abundance in belly fat tissue – causes an intense inflammatory reaction in humans and rats.

The study is to find an “obesity drug” to block what high fats and sugars do to your body. The medical industry is scrambling to figure out which comes first…obesity and then chronic inflammation or inflammation and then obesity.

The answer is rather simple. The two conditions are linked on a molecular level – proven by countless scientific studies. Rid yourself of one and you reduce the other and vice versa!

The right combination of foods for you to consume is likely different from anyone else. Learning what you truly need to eat – as well as what you should never eat – is the first step to ramping up your body’s ability to absorb the right nutrients and detoxify your system.

Getting enough sleep, exercising, and reducing stress are crucial to total body health and anti-aging but it is your food consumption that makes all the difference! What you eat and how much you eat determines the levels of chronic inflammation. Your “perfect eating plan” is exclusive to you.

Experts estimate that as many as 80% of visits to the doctor for random complaints are caused by adverse reactions to something in your food supply. Not necessarily a food allergy so much as a food your body doesn’t recognize or know how to process.

Food is the first and most important step in changing your life because it is the best way to minimize chronic inflammation that leads to depression, disease, and aging. Before emotional, mental, and professional goals – you must take control of your physical body. When your body is healthy and strong – other life changes can be focused on with greater intensity.

First, get well. For more information about finding the perfect eating plan that works for you, read my book One Diet For Life right now. Your body will be glad you did!

To your good health,

Well, that’s lucky. Seriously! Most people today are GROSSLY overweight.

In fact, the majority in the Western world are seriously overweight or even obese. Especially in the USA, where 53% of the population is obese, pre-diabetic, or obese AND diabetic (a condition that’s been christened “diabesity”).

You would think maybe that the USA comes off worst. But that’s not true, actually. Even China, of all places, is worse than the US. Forget that mental image of a spidery, wiry little coolie and realize that—much as they are griping about US political and economics—they LOVE the Western lifestyle!

Macdonalds is present and in the Middle Kingdom (a pet name for China) and we all know what that means. The infamous chain opened the then-largest restaurant in the world. The grand opening day in April 1992 was exceptional: more than forty thousand customers were served by nearly one thousand employees!

It’s mind-boggling. The food industry, of course, is the single biggest cause of obesity and ill-health. Remember Milton Spurlock told us in his movie “Supersize Me” that after a month eating Macdonald’s burgers and colas, the had to give up — on his doctor’s advice: that style of eating was producing visible liver damage in LESS THAN 30 DAYS!

Today, we know a lot more. We have the science of weight loss. Medical science has worked its way past the “You need more willpower” and “Eat less and exercise more” stages, we’ve begun to understand that there are a host of factors that affect our weight; not even just how much we eat!

We realize now that it’s not will power, it’s not just the food industry lies. There are DOZENS of factors which influence weight, including, but not confined to, poisons in our environment, right now, that will force you to gain weight, even if you are a careful and measured eater. We call them obesogens (obesity generators).

GMOs and glyphosate, for sure, make you gain weight.

Epigenetics—not just your genes but what influences your genes—is now known to be really crucial. The people who used to say, “It’s in my glands” or “In my genes” were laughed at. We knew they were just gluttons. But in fact, these individuals are right. If you have certain metabolic disorders, you will never lose weight, until the condition is corrected.

Here’s a jokey cartoon, sent to me by cartoonist Fran Orford!

I know science is a dirty word these days (too much of it is faked). But there are good people out there, researching hard, and finding surprising answers for us.

Shockingly, your bowel flora has more influence on your weight control than almost any other factor in your physiology and makeup. It’s CRUCIAL to have the right bacteria down there in the warm, wet dark, working for you. The wrong bacteria will make you gain weight, even if you practically starve yourself (OK, I’m exaggerating for effect, but you get what I’m saying).

What I’m trying to tell you is that we all have to know what we are up against. Over and over, I find myself stating that the commonest cause of death is ignorance. Nobody can afford to be ignorant today. The world is far too complicated and harsh, even dangerous.

In the USA alone, 88% fail one or more healthy parameters associated with glucose metabolism. Put the other way round, only 12% of the US population are healthy, in terms of weight control factors (fasting insulin, triglycerides, BMI, hip-to-waist ratio, etc.)

To help you survive and live long, plus enjoying the benefits of abundant healthy eating, I have compiled a book with all the best of the current ULTIMATE SCIENCE OF WEIGHT LOSS. No starvation needed. It’s a bumper compilation (over 200 pages, with citations and cross-referencing), to tell you all you need to know to be healthy.

And that’s it really! My other saying (well, I have hundreds, of course!) is that it is impossible to be overweight and healthy. It works in reverse too. If you get even some of the factors I’ll teach you about under control, your weight will melt away, without doing much directly about it.

Willpower, starvation, sweating at the gym and having no fun are all gone, thanks to the knowledge in this book. Of course, you have to change SOMETHING, otherwise, nothing changes! (duh!)

But this guide will tell you what easy and intelligent changes to make! Listen, it’s not just about losing weight, getting healthy and living longer… it’s about contentment, self-worth and living a life of joy!

Get this guide to your future! It’s available in PRINT format, for tablets and reading on a computer or your smartphone!

Here’s to reaching a healthy weight and enjoying life more!

And—as an aside, though hardly irrelevant—cutting carbs, slimming down, will boost your immune system and render you FAR less vulnerable to viruses of any stripe!

Ah, the benefits of sleep! Over the years, I’ve talked extensively about using sleep to manage countless health symptoms (usually attributed to another condition). Quality sleep is one of the most underappreciated ways to guard your health against disease.

Research now confirms that getting enough sleep is key to maintaining a healthy bodyweight. Without it, your risk of obesity is higher and your chances of losing weight are lower.

The Obesity Epidemic

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that more than two-thirds of people in the United States are overweight or obese. The rate of people who also report sleep deprivation (getting less than six hours per night) is 35% and climbing.

A direct connection between weight management and quality sleep is the level of energy you have (or don’t) with sleep deprivation.

The Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics published the results of Pennsylvania State University’s review of fifteen years of research on sleep deprivation and obesity.

The team created tables comparing specifics about study participants and included food intake, lifestyle, the amount of energy they used, as well as the measurement of hormones known to influence weight loss and weight gain.

There was a direct correlation between lack of sleep and the production of two hormones – ghrelin (the “hunger” hormone) and leptin (the “you’re full, stop eating” hormone). People who are sleep-deprived produce more ghrelin and not enough leptin.

The hormone imbalances shown in sleep-deprived study participants coincided with substantially lower energy levels than those who received enough quality sleep benefits.

The results of Pennsylvania State’s review were further backed up by a study published in the medical journal Obesity which found that the more sleep-deprived you are, the more calories you’re likely to consume the following day.

The Swedish researchers from Uppsala University confirmed that lack of sleep causes the body to produce more ghrelin. It also alters your memory skills, higher-level thinking, and mental clarity. This could affect impulse control while shopping for groceries, leading to high-calorie, sugar-laden selections in an effort to “boost” feelings of wakefulness.

Worse, according to a report released by the University of Chicago, prolonged sleep deprivation impairs your ability to process glucose.

This could be another link in the diabetes epidemic affecting the Western world (more than 30 million children and adults in the United States alone) over the last three decades.

Further research could shed light on the relationship between the deficiency of sleep and the growing obesity problem.

The Benefits of Sleep – Stop Depriving Yourself!

In the meantime, you already know how good sleep is for you. Yes, you do!

Gaining weight due to not getting the rest your body so desperately needs makes sense. If you’re perpetually exhausted, will you have the energy to exercise? Will you care about the foods going in your mouth? Unlikely.

Most people reach for comfort foods when tired because your body has difficulty determining the difference between “fatigue” and “hunger.” In other words, you might be eating when what you really need to be doing is sleeping!

3 Quick Tips for Healing Sleep Benefits

Here are a few quick tips for better sleep (and better health) that you can start doing right now!

Consume a healthy diet that gives your body premium fuel.

Add exercise – even 15 minutes of low-impact – to your daily regimen.

It sounds like a broken record, I know. After all, there have been decades of negative information about the dangers of artificial sweeteners. They are cancer-causing and completely toxic to your body.

Artificial sweeteners have been linked to…

Cancer

Depression

Metabolic syndrome

Digestive disorders

Neurodegenerative disease

Chronic inflammation

As if that wasn’t bad enough, there is new evidence that the two conditions they were thought to help control is actually worsened by their use!

Artificial Sweeteners to Control Weight and Diabetes?

Doctors and nutritionists alike have suggested artificial sweeteners in place of (natural and refined) sugars for diabetics as well as those trying to lose weight.

In a new study published by Nature, scientists at Weizmann Institute discovered that aspartame leads to glucose intolerance! Researchers gave laboratory mice the comparative maximum dose allowed in humans by the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the control group was given straight glucose in water.

After 11 weeks, the mice receiving the artificial sweetener showed “significant glucose intolerance” compared to the control group mice. They repeated the experiment several times, using different mice and their results were the same. They also found evidence of specific bacteria linked to obesity in humans.

This chemical toxin is found in abundance in “diabetic friendly” and “low calorie” foods!

Artificial sweeteners may not have any calories but that is the least of your worries where these supposedly “harmless” substitutes are concerned. The reason they don’t register calories is due to the fact that your body is unable to digest them.

Think about that for a moment.

You can’t process these unnatural sweeteners because your body can’t even identify what they are and considers them a contaminant that should be flushed from your system!

The team with Weizmann theorized that gut flora is directly impacted by sugar substitutes. We need beneficial bacteria such as lactobacillus and bifidobacterium in order to keep our bodies in optimum condition. They directly influence digestion, metabolism, and even brain health.

Without them, your system begins to break down from the inside out.

To test the possibility, they reviewed the data of almost 400 people who regularly used artificial sweeteners and found a strong association to their levels of glucose intolerance.

Taking their theory a step further, the scientists asked seven volunteers who never used artificial sweeteners to consume the maximum allowed for one week. By the end of the small experiment, four of the participants showed a substantial drop in glucose tolerance and measurable changes in their gut flora.

Yes, additional research will now have to be done to confirm (and larger studies done on humans), but considering the known problems caused by these chemicals already, how much more evidence do we need?

Better Options to Sugar Substitutes

The developed world admittedly consumes too much sugar. It is the root cause of the obesity epidemic, the explosion of diabetes cases, and is undeniably linked to cancer development.

When substitute sugar was introduced to the market – at an estimated 20,000 times sweeter option with no calories – doctors and nutritionists worldwide encouraged their use. Food manufacturers started putting it in everything from sodas to bread.

Decades later, we’re faced with the consequences. The answer is not to find fake chemical solutions so we can keep eating our favorite junk food. The answer is to omit the junk – as much as possible – and accept that better nutrition is the answer to a healthy, longer life.

You might love the taste of sugar and the substitutes marketed as a “healthier” option. Your body doesn’t love it. Your body sees these products as toxic invaders that are dangerous to you. That leads to an immune response and inflammation.

Inflammation is the basis of so much sickness and disease around the world and that is the ultimate danger of artificial sweeteners. Body-wide chaos and a state of alert that throws all your basic systems off balance.

When you crave something sweet, choose fruit! Natural fructose (sugars) in fruit don’t overwhelm your body and these foods provide fuel for your beneficial bacteria.

If you love your coffee and sugary treats, consider using raw, organic honey instead of the refined white sugars. It is naturally antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory…while still being sweet and delicious! None of those artificial sweetener dangers to detract from your enjoyment of an occasional goodie.

Whenever possible, choose raw and natural – your gut flora will thank you.

When you consider obesity causes, one fact stands out clearly: our bodies are being overdosed with FOOD. In my four decades of being a doctor, I’ve learned that some of our biggest health concerns come not from what you’re lacking but from what you’re eating that your body doesn’t want or need.

You already know that portions in developed countries are out of control…it’s far more food than the human body needs. However, when you add the flood of over-processed and chemically heavy choices to the situation, and you create a perfect storm of inflammatory conditions that your body is unable to overcome naturally.

Simple, whole foods that provide the energy and nutrition you need to live have fallen by the wayside. The obesity epidemic is a real – and potentially catastrophic – situation.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, more than two-thirds of the United States population alone is considered overweight or obese. Obesity statistics are around 18% for children and rapidly rising to join the overwhelming rate of adult obesity.

Obesity Causes: The Role of Inflammation

Inflammation has now been linked as a cause of obesity and the reverse is also true that obesity leads to systemic inflammation. This highly dangerous process attacks and inflames your tissues until you are left vulnerable to disease.

Cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, diabetes, and more all have risk factors linked to both obesity and inflammation. Either of these two conditions – if left untreated – will lead to illness and rapid aging.

The World Can No Longer Ignore the Signs

A recent study completed at Norway’s Research Institute for Internal Medicine, University of Oslo found that obesity is just as dangerous as malnutrition on a molecular level.

Too much food stresses these tiny power plants and causes damage that leads to inflammation.

The real causes of obesity (and inflammation) are easy to pinpoint. On the whole, we eat too much, fat accumulates in the cells, the mitochondria become overworked and damaged, which leads to an immune response, resulting in inflammation over your entire body that becomes chronic after years of the same cycle.

The medical industry is scrambling to figure out which comes first…obesity and then inflammation or inflammation and then obesity.

The answer is an easy one. The two conditions are linked on a molecular level – proven by countless scientific studies. Rid yourself of one and you reduce the other and vice versa!

Address the Causes of Obesity and Inflammation NOW!

The right combination of foods for you to consume is likely different from anyone else. It isn’t about “food allergies” as much as how you personally metabolize the foods you eat.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are genetic markers specific to you and determine how you will react to food.

What you eat and how much you eat determines the levels of inflammation in your body.

Your “perfect eating plan” is exclusive to you. That means standard diets, fads, and quick weight loss supplements are not the answer.

It starts with every bite of food that goes into your body. Experts estimate that as many as 80% of visits to the doctor for random complaints are caused by adverse reactions to something in your food supply. Not necessarily a food allergy so much as a food your body doesn’t recognize or know how to process.

Food is the first and most important step in changing your life because it is the best way to minimize inflammation that causes obesity (and vice versa) – which in turn lead to depression, disease, and rapid aging.

Before emotional, mental, and professional goals – you must take control of your physical body. When your body is healthy and strong – other life changes can be focused on with greater intensity.

First, get well. For more information about finding the perfect eating plan that works for you, read my book Diet Wise right now. Your body will be glad you did!

How Many Of These Weight Hacks Do You Know?

Genes

It isn’t your fault. There are genes that will block your success. The chapter on genes will explain how to overcome this obstacle, what genes affect weight, and how to tune them out for easy, successful weight loss. Revealed is the number #1 gene that affects your weight and how to manage it for successful slimming.

Keto

Kill the hunger. Would that help? Nature’s ultimate way of healthy eating is the way our ancestors did it. You cannot possibly be overweight if you eat like a caveman! It’s easy and you won’t feel hungry.

Low Carbs

Sugar

Whatever the food industry wants you to think, no question: sugar is the number #1 killer. Sugar is the number one cause of obesity and overweight (fact). But is there an alternative? How can I enjoy desserts and delicious drinks in my life without gaining weight? [just this week emails have been published between Coca Cola and the CDC, making it very clear that Coca Cola wants the dangers of sugar in its drinks played down]1

Yes, this is the ultimate lazy way to lose weight. It could be right for some. But you need to know the pros and cons, otherwise you may end up eating what is wrong for you.

Food Allergies

Decades ago, I made a super discovery: if you avoid certain foods your body doesn’t tolerate, the weight just drops off, without feeling hungry. The secret we call “hidden food allergies” and you need to get the dope on this. Everyone has a least one “hidden allergy”.

Diabetes and obesity go hand in hand. We now talk about diabesity. Don’t go there! Diabetes accelerates aging. Even on medication, you still risk blindness and amputations. Doctors don’t even believe there is a cure.
Can’t I just take a simple pill and be done with it? Not without knowing the many dangers of weight loss pills. They screw up your metabolism—that’s what they are supposed to do. That’s never a good idea—not when there are so many better ways to do things.

Herbs For Weight Loss

These can help. They won’t do it all for you. Some remedies are scams and this section will tell you what could help, what has little or no science and the absolute scams to avoid. Oh yes, there are lots of them, preying in people who are struggling

It’s In My Glands!

You may have suspected that. But friends and family say “Yeah right.” It’s humiliating. Thing is, you may be right. Poor thyroid function and excess estrogen, for example, both cause massive unpleasant weight gain. One of the world’s best patient advocates of thyroid dysfunctionality is here to help you and get your metabolism up to speed.

Estrogen Dominance

We live in a strange chemically polluted world that makes it really hard for anyone to be healthy. One of the big problems is estrogen-mimicking chemicals in our environment, the water supply and food. Some make you gain weight and are called obesogens. Every woman knows the estrogens make you gain weight relentlessly and feel grumpy (PMS). You have to learn to correct this if you want to be slim and healthy (men too!)

Hidden Shocking Surprise Factors

Science is now telling us there are things that cause weight gain you would never guess. Hidden parasites, poor sleep and stress overload are among many factors that can’t be corrected by just “eating less”. You have to fix the real cause of the problem, then sail onward to your desired target weight. Cortisol, for example, the “stress” hormone, has the unpleasant side effect of causing weight gain. Fortunately, there are ways of improving your sleep or reducing stress (or both) that make it unnecessary to diet.

Inflammation

The vicious trap that may have you in its grip! The number one #1 cause of obesity is inflammation. Yet inflammation is the #1 cause of obesity! Want the weight to start tumbling off, with little or no effort? Get rid of inflammation. You can have it measured and there are LOTS of easy ways to reduce inflammation. That could be a better option the starving or munching endless carrots!

Exercise

It doesn’t work! Whatever you may believe or have been told about working out, sweating and punishing your body (no pain, no gain, right?), IT DOES NOT HELP MUCH WITH WEIGHT LOSS. There are several good reason to take plenty of healthy exercize—but weight loss isn’t one of them! An hour of strenuous tennis is about equivalent to a spoonful of sugar. Much easier to give up the sugar!

Keeping It Off

The second biggest “fail” in weight loss is keeping it off. All too often the slimmer is successful and thinks of rewarding herself by going back to pizza or cheesecake. There are secret for keeping weight off permanently and these are shared in my book from successful slimmers, who have been in good shape for many years. How do they do it? They tell all!

It’s called “The Doctor’s Chocolate” and is supplied to the public by True Healthy Products, a very fine ethical company in Florida.

Why is it so special? Lots of reasons.

Tastes brilliant, that’s number #1

Only 20 calories a piece. Amazing! That’s number #2

Quenches your appetite. You couldn’t possible eat too many. That’s #3

Uses xylitol as a sweetener. No glycemic effect. That’s #4.

Incorporates 200 mg of L-theanine, nature’s natural tranquillizer. Kids love it at bed and time and fall asleep; parents find it calms them. That’s #5.

People lose weight on it. The record so far is 100 lbs, just by eating chocolate (you kidding? No!) That’s #6.

The chocolates are sweetened with xylitol instead of sugar and blended with natural raspberry and fig flavors for a dark chocolate bon bon with a whipped truffle filling that is comparable to high end chocolates, but safe for Diabetic use. The Doctor’s Chocolates are appetite suppressants that also provide a gentle calming effect due to the inclusion of L-theanine and are used by many for stress relief.

The Doctor’s Chocolate goes far beyond just using healthy dark chocolate in our formulation of wonderful, all-natural ingredients. Our chocolate is in the form of raspberry/chocolate truffles. There is a tiny bit of natural sugar contained in the natural raspberry flavoring and in the fruit. However, the amount and the glycemic index is so low as to be safe even for diabetics,

Right now True Healthy Products are offering a large discount. Remember, this isn’t candy; this is The Doctor’s Chocolate, a functional health food. Don’t compare it with Hershey’s or Mars, either in health qualities or price.

Enjoy every mouth-watering piece.

Prof.

PS I lost 28 lbs using my designer chocolate as a “hunger stop” (a nibble when I felt a bit hungry). One piece really can kill your appetite. It’s so satisfying.

Here’s a guest blog by excellent writer Jonny Bowden. He’s not a Doc – but he probably should have been!!

Have you ever wondered how your body actually burns fat?

Years ago a popular health magazine decided to try to answer that same question with a novel approach. They looked at how people actually gain weight, reasoning that if we knew all the “tricks” to gaining weight, we could learn what not to do if we wanted to stay lean.

So they followed around a bunch of Sumo wrestlers whose job requires them to maintain enormous stores of body fat. Whatever it is they were doing, that’s exactly what we shouldn’t do.

Now Sumo wrestlers gain weight for a number of reasons, and genetics certainly plays a role, but what they did eating-wise is the thing we want to pay attention to, because it’s ultimately going to teach us something about how to burn fat.

Here’s what the Sumo guys did …

They worked out a bit. They lazed around. They worked out some more. They took a nap. And then, at the end of the day, they ate their one meal, a veritable Roman orgy of food that would make the buffet at the Bellagio in Vegas seem skimpy. Shortly after this multi-thousand calorie feast they’d go to bed for the night.

Okay, folks, what can we learn from this?

One reason this technique is so effective for weight gain is that it mobilizes every fat-storing mechanism we have in our body. I’ll explain how in a moment …

The main point here is that if you want to burn fat instead of store it, you have to learn how to turn off your fat-storing mechanisms, and instead turn on what I like to call your “fat-burning switch.”

Needless to say, the fat-burning switch on a Sumo wrestler doesn’t get much “on” time.

So here’s the biochemistry behind the Sumos’ weight gain…

When you eat a big meal—which is inevitably loaded with carbohydrates—it sends your blood sugar soaring. The body immediately releases a hormone (insulin) whose job it is to wrangle that sugar and get it out of the bloodstream where—if it were to stay elevated for very long and if that were to happen frequently—it would do some serious damage.

Insulin escorts sugar into the cells. When the muscle cells don’t need it, it goes into the fat cells. No wonder insulin is also known as the “fat-storing hormone.”

Insulin does its work with the help of an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase (LPL), which is kind of like the “fat-storing enzyme.” LPL takes triglycerides from the bloodstream, cleaves them into smaller parts (called fatty acids), and then promptly helps store these fatty acids in your fat cells.

In the Sumo scenario there are plenty of triglycerides to break up and store, because he just ate a high-carb meal which not only increases triglycerides but also drives insulin levels up.

It gets worse.

Once insulin is riding the seas of the bloodstream, it effectively locks the doors to the fat cells. They won’t open up and release their bounty (that is, you won’t burn fat) until insulin levels come back down. Of course, the more you continue to eat that same high-carb diet, the less your insulin levels go down.

That’s the (very oversimplified) biochemistry, and it works that way whether you’re an audience member of the Ellen show or you’re a professional Sumo wrestler.

And now to our question: How do you burn fat?

You do the exact opposite of everything I just said, and here’s why …

Insulin has a sister hormone, and its name is glucagon. It’s probably something you’ve never heard of before, but it’s a critical component of your fat-burning biochemistry.

When blood sugar is low, and you need more energy, and food isn’t available, glucagon is secreted. Its purpose is the exact opposite of insulin’s. Glucagon goes into the cells and causes fat to be released. And it does so with the help of a fat-burning enzyme called hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL).

Much like glucagon is the “opposite” of insulin, HSL is the “opposite” of LPL, the fat-storing enzyme we spoke of earlier. HSL breaks down triglycerides (the form of fat stored in your cells) into fatty acids and glycerol, so as they travel around the bloodstream they can be burned for energy or excreted. This glucagon-HSL axis is what I call the “fat-burning switch.”

Working backwards, we can see the obvious: Fat burning (and weight loss) won’t take place unless the fat-burning switch (glucagon/ HSL) is turned on. The fat-burning switch is in the “off” position as long as insulin levels are high. Insulin levels are high whenever blood sugar is high, and blood sugar is typically high in response to high-carbohydrate meals.

Hence the solution to the problem of how to burn fat is pretty simple. Keep blood sugar in a nice, moderate range where it won’t trigger excess insulin. By keeping blood sugar (and insulin) down, you allow glucagon/HSL—the fat-burning switch—to do its magic.

If you want to trigger your fat-burning switch, you have to learn to eat in a way that won’t trigger excess insulin. Fortunately, that isn’t that hard to do.

A diet composed mainly of what I call “The Jonny Bowden Four Food Groups” is a good place to start.

What are those “Four Food Groups”?

Food you can hunt, fish, gather, or pluck.

Now that’s a prescription for healthy living and also one that’s pretty much guaranteed to flip your fat-burning switch to the “on” position!

Sincerely,

Jonny Bowden, PhD, CNS aka “the Rogue Nutritionist”

P.S. Due to the overwhelming response I’ve received about this cellular switch that can turn you into a fat-burning machine, I recently put together an exposé that demonstrates EXACTLY how to do this yourself.

Folks, nobody is really talking about this, but it’s something you MUST know if you want to burn fat AND keep it off for good. The dirty little secret is that slightly over 1 in 3 people have this switch turned off leading to excess fat accumulation.

So, sit back, relax and go watch this exposé right now as I am not sure how much longer I’ll have it up.

It’s one of those great animated drawings!!

I want you to take a tape measure and measure your waist. Don’t cheat or breathe in! Let it hang out. Then measure the largest circumference of your hips and note down the two figures. Your waist should be LESS than your hips. Preferably a couple of inches less.

The reason is that yet another study has suggested that waist-to-hip ratio is much more sensitive than body mass index (BMI) at predicting risk of subsequent coronary disease.

Writing in an early online edition of Circulation, Dr Dexter Canoy (University of Cambridge, UK) and colleagues report that increased abdominal obesity — measured in terms of waist-to-hip ratio, was more “consistently and strongly” predictive of coronary heart disease (CHD) than BMI among men and women participating in the European Prospective Investigation Into Cancer and Nutrition in Norfolk (EPIC-NORFOLK) study.

“In our study, in men who were obese and had lower waist-to-hip ratios, their rates of CHD tended to be slightly lower than if they had high waist-to-hip ratios.” Coney said. “But in women, at all levels of BMI, waist-to-hip ratios were strongly predictive of heart disease.” [my italics, KS-M]

The study showed that even if we take into account habits like smoking, alcohol intake, or sedentary lifestyle, and we take into account what we already know are important predictors of CHD such as hypertension and dyslipidemia, you will still have an excess risk of a heart attack, if you have a higher than 1.0 waist-to-hip ratio.

Waist circumference alone was also a fair predictor of CHD events, but not nearly as accurate as taking the ratio of waist and hips together. Other recent studies have also shown that this is the best predictive measure we have.

A big bum protects!

Basically, for every increase of roughly 6.5 cm (2.5 inches) in hip circumference for men, and for roughly 9 cm (3.5 inches) in women, risk of developing CHD was reduced by 20%.

That’s not to say people should develop a big hip circumference to protect themselves from risk, but for any body size, those with bigger hips tended to be associated with lower risk.

The importance of this new direction in health is this: we know overweight and obesity is a risk factor. But, if the overweight individual has larger hips than waist, the risk is actually somewhat attenuated. Conversely, if you are of a normal weight or maybe only mildly overweight, you should not be smug. Formerly, doctors would pat you on the head and say “Don’t worry; you’re fine.”

Well now we know that if your waist-to-hip ratio is bad, you are in danger, even if your weight is a healthy average.

That’s different to what you have learned over the years, I’m sure. But you need to let it sink in. I want you to live much longer than average and now I can no longer say just keep your weight in trim.

I have to say keep that waistline inside your hipline! To be very exact (if you have a calculator handy), your risk can be assessed as follows:

A recent trip to a doctor to have my ears syringed resulted in a routine weighing on a balance scale—you know, the kind where you are balanced against weights slid along a beam. These are accurate to within 0.5% or less.

This is very different to the spring loaded bathroom scales. As metal springs age they go stiffer. What does that mean? They stretch more reluctantly and won’t let the needle on the dial get right around to your true weight.

In other words they lie and tell you that you are lighter than you really are.

I found with a shock I was 12 pounds heavier than I thought (hastily instigated more time in the gym and changed my evening diet routine).

So, let me warn you of this. You probably weigh more than you think you do. Get a proper weight on a balance scale (make sure the doctor’s office has the right scales—the nurse will probably do it for you for no cost). Check this against your bathroom scales on the same day and if the difference is more than 5- 6 lbs, junk them.

Junk them anyway after about 2 years max.

Simple spring-loaded bathroom scales are fine for following change of weight, such as when you are determinedly dieting. But you must still check your true weight from time to time.

In any case, know that your weight is NOT the most critical health measure. Muscle weighs more than fat so you can go heavier as you exercise and replace fat with muscle.

What’s the most important measure for health? Waist to hip ratio. Measure yourself round the widest part of your abdomen (let it out, no cheating!) Then do the same round your hips. Men should be 1:1 maximum (waist same as hips). Women should be 0.85 (waist at least 1- 2 inches LESS than the hips).

This supersedes the old discredited measure of body mass index (Michael Jordan, a superb athlete, is obese according to BMI).

And gals, waist to hip is what attracts guys the most!
