Important New Cancer-Fighting Tool: “Ben’s Game”
and an inspiring story of selfless giving!
I first published this short article several years ago. I’ve brought it out because I don’t think it should be forgotten!
Ben Duskin, nine years old, is in remission from Leukemia. Throughout his course of treatment, Ben played computer games and began to think about the need to have something positive to help others kids battle their illnesses. Ben’s wish was to design a video game that would be helpful for kids like him who have cancer, a way to fight back and relieve some of the pain and stress involved with treatment.
“The initial response was overwhelmingly pessimistic” said Patricia Wilson, Executive Director. “People told us this venture was nearly impossible without taking several years and literally millions of dollars.” A hero stepped forward: Eric Johnston, and his employer Lucas Arts fully supported his efforts. Not only did Eric want to make Ben’s wish a reality, he planned to involve Ben in every step of the process. For months, Ben and Eric have been meeting on a regular basis to make the game just as Ben envisioned it.
Wilson added, “Eric and Ben achieved the impossible! Ben’s wish is inspiring, because it was selfless and – Ben is a philanthropist. Finding an angel like Eric Johnston was a miracle, and having the support of UCSF and his medical team was invaluable.”
Ben’s own physician, Dr. Seymour Zoger of UCSF Children’s Hospital served as a medical advisor for the game. USCF Children’s Hospital will serve as the first medical facility to install the game for its pediatric patients. “The science for Ben’s game came largely from what Ben learned himself in the course of treatment” said Dr. Zoger.

Dear Dr. Keith,
I have a dear friend, age 68, who began heavy dose radiation treatment today for Esophageal
Cancer at the Dana Farber Cancer center here in Boston. He was diagnosed with stage 4 earlier this year and has gone through 12 weeks of Chemo reducing the tumor by 90% and was told he was fine. Then two weeks ago after a PET Scan they told him the tomor had now located in either of his lymph nodes on both sides of his throat and that he needed to immediately begin 10 weeks of heavy dose radiation which at first he said no to. They said if not, he’d be dead before years end so he began today even tho they said it may ruin his esophegus and he may have to be on a feeding tube the rest of his life.
Could you please respond to this information and tell us the better way, if there is one, to heal Bob from this deadly cancer before it is too late? I have read of the Hydrogen Peroxide and water approach to curing cance cells but know nothing about it? We are open to any help you may suggest to save Bob’s life. He is my brother in Christ and just a great guy with a loving family.
God Bless you and Many thanks.

Dear Russ,
Specific question in relation to a specific patient amounts to consultative advice and is very dangerous here in the States.
Usually, also I don’t offer treatment suggestions unless the patient requests it personally.
Otherwise over the years I have wasted a lot of time and intellect on proposals that the patient is not interested in and would never apply.
It’s safer to say then that you friend would be best advized to read my book Cancer Confidential and decide for himself what alternatives might appeal.
Dear Russ,
I presume Brother in Christ is a US expression and doesn’t man a blood brother.
Regards, Keith
