Popular medical advice calls for a low-salt diet. Magazines, television, and news outlets report that salt is bad for your heart.
The Institute of Medicine released the results of their study on this very topic and determined that there was no evidence that drastically reducing salt intake would help your heart.
Even more shocking, they were unable to determine the possible harm in removing salt from your diet!
In fact, recent studies have linked low sodium intake to diabetes, flagging metabolism, heart disease, decreased cognitive ability in older adults, and an increase in falls resulting in fractures.
Still, the medical industry as a whole still endorses a low-sodium diet. Popular recommended levels are as much as half the levels once believed to be best for overall health.
What you need to know is your potassium-to-sodium ratio. Your body is 70% salt water and you need salt to live.
Our modern diet is severely unbalanced. We consume more salt than recommended for “heart health” but that isn’t the issue at all. The main problem is that we consume approximately 40% too little potassium! In other words, the focus shouldn’t be on limiting sodium but increasing your intake of potassium.
Best Sources of Potassium
- Leafy greens such as spinach, kale, and collards
- Orange veggies that include sweet potatoes and squash
- Citrus of all kinds such as oranges and grapefruit
- Nuts, seeds, beans, and grains
Hard to do when the “low sodium” labels on processed foods pretty much guarantees that there is little to no potassium content. It is processed right out of foods and too costly to add back in. The food manufacturers who aren’t worried about “low sodium” are no better! They process out the potassium and add three times the sodium – creating a staggering imbalance in foods that would be balanced naturally without the processing.
Without adequate amounts of salt and potassium, you aren’t going to feel well and your body isn’t going to function at its best.
The best solution (always) is to avoid food that is over-processed and pre-packaged. If it comes out of a box or a can – your body doesn’t want it.
Since adding salt during cooking or while sitting at your table only makes up about 10% of the sodium you consume each day, that means the other 90% is coming from refined salts used by food manufacturers to “flavor” food and extend shelf life.
Most salt on your grocery shelves are treated with terrifying chemicals such as bleach, sulfuric acid, cyanide, and ammonia – and those same chemicals are in your processed food! These chemicals and heavy metals used to create table salt, kosher salt, and most “sea” salts are dangerous to your overall potassium-to-sodium ratio and can lead to problems with hydrating your system properly. Refined salt is toxic and your body treats it that way to protect you!
It’s no wonder that an estimated 70% of the US population suffers regularly from dehydration!
What happens when salt is refined? It loses a large majority of the more than 80 minerals your body craves. If you have cravings for salty foods – your body might be trying to tell you something! You don’t need table salt, sea salt wannabes, or Kosher salt…you need real salt.
Your body needs salt…but not the salt you’re used to!
What is Real Salt?
Real salt is off-white, soft, slightly moist, and tastes exactly like the ocean. Consumed exactly as it exists in nature means no chemicals, no heavy metals, and all flavor. Your body won’t reject it because it can be absorbed and utilized properly.
