Type 2 diabetes is destroying the health of millions. Unlike type 1 diabetes (which represents less than 10% of all diagnosed cases), type 2 is preventable with the right mix of diet and lifestyle. What many patients might not know that it’s also reversible!
That’s right. You can control type 2 diabetes to the point that you can reverse it. This is a proven fact.
Dr. Michelle Magee, director of Washington’s MedStar Diabetes Institute explains, “We have seen numerous people reverse their condition. It takes a real dedication for the rest of their lives.”
It’s also a fact that even if you haven’t been diagnosed, you can still have glucose blood levels high enough to cause damage to your body. Of particular concern is the damage done to the heart. Your risk of heart disease rises right along with your blood sugar.
Unfortunately, too many people find dedication to diet and lifestyle difficult – even to benefit their long-term health. Since 1980, the number of patients diagnosed with diabetes (108 million) has almost quadrupled, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
As of 2014, more than 422 million people have diabetes globally.
They go on to state that in 2012 alone, 1.5 million people died around the world as a direct cause of the disease and another 2.2 million people died of other diseases that were impacted by blood glucose levels (such as heart attack or stroke). Those numbers are the same or higher every year, making diabetes one of the leading causes of death.
Even small changes can control type 2 diabetes, reduce the impact of your symptoms, and help you live a better life while drastically slowing the progression of the disease.
Diabetes is a major contributing factor for heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure,
lower limb amputation, and nerve damage throughout the body.
The American Diabetes Association explains type 2 diabetes simply, “If you have type 2 diabetes your body does not use insulin properly. This is called insulin resistance. At first, your pancreas makes extra insulin to make up for it but, over time, it isn’t able to keep up and can’t make enough insulin to keep your blood glucose at normal levels.”
The primary risk factors for type 2 diabetes are…
- Obesity
- Poor diet
- Smoking
- Lack of exercise
- High blood pressure
All of these risk factors are manageable by you. You can prevent this prevalent disease from affecting you or your children. The rate of children being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes is a new problem the scientific community links to some of the same lifestyle factors above – primarily childhood obesity, poor diet, and lack of exercise.
New Research Links More Protein to Diabetes Prevention
Tel Aviv University in Israel recently presented their findings on controlling type 2 diabetes with increased consumption of whey protein.
Lead author and professor, Daniela Jakubowicz, MD, explained, “A high-calorie protein breakfast, medium-sized lunch, and small dinner is a proven successful strategy for weight loss, improved satiety and reduced glucose spikes throughout the day in people with obesity and Type 2 diabetes. However, the benefits of high protein content at breakfast also depend on the protein source and quality.”
Dr. Jakubowicz got a bit more specific. “Whey protein powder, which is a byproduct of milk during cheese production, induced greater satiety and reduction of glucose spikes after meals compared to other protein sources, such as eggs, soy or tuna.”
The research spanned almost two years and followed the progress of 48 participants who were overweight or obese and diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
The group on the whey protein for breakfast plans had incredible results. They lost more weight, felt fuller after meals, weren’t hungry throughout the day, and had far fewer glucose spikes. Overall, they had more significant decreases in their HbA1C (glycated hemoglobin) than the other members of the study on alternate eating plans.
Dr. Jakubowicz added, “The whey protein diet significantly suppresses the hunger hormone ghrelin. A whey protein drink is easily prepared and provides the advantages of a high-protein breakfast on weight loss, reduction of hunger, glucose spikes, and HbA1c.”
