Where The Holistic Rubber Meets The Scientific Road

Part 2: Here’s What You Can Do to Prevent Dementia

Last week I promised you more on the possibility of Alzheimer’s disease being caused by a microbial infection (“Can You Catch Dementia” 3 Jun 2016).

Even so, I was surprised by the serendipity of reading an article on this exact topic in my New Scientist today (4 Jun 2016, vol 230 No 3076). In addition to the work of Ruth Itzhaki, professor emeritus of molecular neurobiology at Britain’s University of Manchester, I told you about last week, New Scientist was reporting work by Rudolph Tanzi of Harvard Medical School.

He reinforces the strong likelihood that Alzheimer’s is, in fact, an infection caused by either Herpes Simplex or Chlamydia. The amyloid plaques that so mesmerize scientists might not be the cause of the disease at all (I have always argued this is illogical thinking). Maybe the plaques are the brain’s response to the infection?

In other words amyloid plaques may be part of the immune response.

Wouldn’t this typify the blundering stupidity of modern medicine: to try and get rid of the one good thing that’s fighting the problem, on the crazy assumption it must be causing the problem? (Without any evidence at all.)

Working with Robert Moir at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Tanzi’s team has shown that beta-amyloid can act as an anti-microbial compound, and thus may form part of our immune system.

To test whether beta-amyloid defends us against microbes that manage to get into the brain, the team injected bacteria into the brains of mice that had been bred to develop plaques like humans do. Plaques formed straight away.

These sticky plaques may trap and kill bacteria, viruses or other pathogens, but if they aren’t cleared away fast enough, they may lead to inflammation and tangles of another protein, called tau, causing neurons to die and the progression towards Alzheimer’s disease.

“When you look in the plaques, each one had a single bacterium in it,” says Tanzi. “A single bacterium can induce an entire plaque overnight.” That’s pretty scary, especially when the vast majority of us carry Herpes Simplex and Chlamydia.

“This work is really important for showing that amyloid can be related to infection,” says Brian Balin at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Pennsylvania. His work has implicated Chlamydia pneumoniae as a possible trigger for beta-amyloid formation, and other research has implicated the Herpes virus.

If infectious agents are kicking off the formation of plaques, then vaccines could head them off. “You could vaccinate against those pathogens, and potentially prevent this problem arising later in life,” says Moir.

It won’t be easy though. Balin says, “Developing vaccines against herpes and chlamydia has proven difficult. People have been trying for many years now.”1

What Can You Do To Prevent Dementia?

Let’s not wait. I don’t want to turn into a cabbage while they figure out a vaccine. How can we beat these low-grade “stealth pathogens” that get under the radar and cause all sorts of mischief?

First and foremost… you guessed it… is strengthen the immune system. All good nutritional formulas are a great start. Nutrition builds health from the bottom up.

But a number of specific approaches suggest themselves:

1. Beta-glucans. I wrote about these recently. The best formula I know out there is from my colleagues at Better Way Health.

But what should you choose? There are mountains of junk out there… me-too fluff, padded with fillers and impurities. I wanted to introduce you to the good stuff.

My colleagues at Better Way Health have developed what has to be the best beta-glucan formula in the world. A lot of competitors have a very impure product which contain under-performing and shabby ingredients.

In the case of Better Way Health’s Beta-glucan I can say this:

A large 2008 JANA study carried out by Dr. Vaclav Vetvicka at Louisville University showed that Better Way Health’s Beta-glucan (Glucan #300) has the highest proven immunological benefits: Eight (8) times more effective than any mushroom based beta-glucan, and 160x more effective than many of the popular Internet products being sold.

Don’t go cheap! Better Way Health’s Glucan #300 has the highest purity (over 83%), whereas the next in line, Beta Right 101 and Swanson, have a purity of approximately 70%). You really do get what you pay for.

2. Vitamin D. No immune system works well without plenty of vitamin D3 on site. It’s been called the antibiotic vitamin. It’s ridiculously cheap. Take 4,000 IU daily.

3. Chlorine dioxide wash out. I don’t go for all the drama and mysticism on this. Just take some and be done. Also known as MMS (nobody dares sell it as that any more). You can buy it on Amazon.

Do NOT take your chlorine dioxide preparation within one hour of beta-glucans, one will neutralize the other.

4. Iodine. Most individuals in the Western world are deficient. It was supposed to be added to bread and everyone thought “That takes care of that.” No it didn’t. We have since been bombarded with bromine, a common endocrine disruptor. What makes it so dangerous is that it competes for the same receptors that are used to capture iodine. If you are exposed to a lot of bromine, your body will not hold on to the iodine that it needs.

Bromine is found in pesticides, plastics, breads and doughs, some soft drinks, some meds, fire retardants and swimming pool treatments.

5. Eupatorium perfoliatum. This common plant has many names, including “agueweed”, “feverwort” or “sweating-plant”. Now there’s a clue!

It’s great for fevers and infections. The reason? It contains massive amounts of vitamin C. It’s taken as a bitter tea. It’ll fight almost anything.

Beware overdosing: children one cupful; adults two to three cupful.

6. Homeopathy. One of the most devastating outbreaks of disease in history was the 1918 “Spanish Flu” Pandemic. Over a billion people were affected. Nobody knows the exact death toll but estimates put it around 40 – 50 million (perhaps as high as 100 million).

While the mortality rate of people treated with traditional medicine and drugs was 28%, those treated by homeopathic physicians had mortality rate of 1%.

Make no mistake: homeopathy works, despite the derisive bleating’s of the ignorant mob. But it is not a simple skill.

7. Simpler Homeopathy. Easier is to take what’s called “complex homeopathy” or “German homeopathy (which is odd, since traditional homeopathy was developed in Germany too!)

You can get drainage mixtures, anti-viral mixtures, miasms (for removing disease tendencies) and mixtures called “chords” which attack disease at the physical, emotional and etheric level. Too much to go into here, but look for products by HEEL (Germany), Guna (Italy) and HerbaSanté (Canada).

I can supply the latter, so anyone wanting their Lympatox (lymphatic detox), let me know. They also do a compound mixture called Alzaide (for Alzheimer’s) and Homeotox, which stimulates the emunctories (drainage organs: skin, liver, bile, kidneys, lungs and gut).

Drop me a line.

8. Micro-Current Therapy. Finally, there are micro-current therapy devices, like the Russian SCENAR which I made famous with my 1999 book Virtual Medicine, now revised and much expanded as Medicine Beyond.

The best up-to-date device is probably the Avazzia. It has settings to calm inflammation of all kinds.

Probably the greatest medical miracle of modern times is vagus nerve stimulation. It shuts down inflammation, even that due to hidden low-grade pathogens, virtually overnight.

You can watch a great webinar with me interviewing micro-current therapy experts, talking about vagal nerve stimulation. After you’ve watched the webinar, click here for special Avazzia pricing.

It is also in Medicine Beyond, p. 225.
